American History Assignment 12-8-10

Many new technologies were introduced in World War I. The introduction of new weaponry, like poison gas and machine guns, and combat vehicles, such as tanks and aircraft, made this war deadlier than any previous ones.

Use the links below to research the new battlefield technologies in World War I. Then write three journal entries from the point of view of a soldier in the trenches. Each journal entry should be 3 paragraphs in length and shared on google docs.

One-third of US teens are victims of cyberbullying

Ask students to read Stacy Teicher Khadaroo's article "One-third of US teens are victims of cyberbullying," published in the Christian Science Monitor on October 8, 2010. 

• What do you think about the finding that half of all American teens worry about safety on the internet? How do you feel about this?
  
• In the article Richard Harrison says that young people need to understand the importance of "setting ground rules of what's acceptable behavior" and better understand "how that technology may be used against them ... where they could be blackmailed or cyberbullied." What do you think about this? How does this relate to what students have talked about in class as far as rules, regulations and guidelines are concerned?
  
• If you were asked to particpate in a workshop or hear a presentation on cyberbullying, what would you want it to address? What questions would you like to have answered?

American History Assignment 11-19-10

Students should pick one of the following topics: the Haymarket Riot, the Homestead Strike, or the Pullman Strike. Students are to write at least a 3 paragraph newspaper article describing the event, why violence occurred (if it did), and how the strike affected workers. Then students are to write editorials in response to the articles, offering their opinions about the events, workers' actions, the company's actions, and any government involvement. Newspaper article must include minimum of two images. Share the assignment with me on google docs.

American History 11-15-10

You are an inventor in the late 1800s, and you want to start a business to sell your new inventions. Write a business plan for investors that will encourage them to lend you money to start your business. Include information about what you will sell, how you will make it, and how you can avoid conflicts with the workers who make it.Decide which business practices you would use and which you would not. Write two to three paragraphs in which you explain why your product would sell, which business practices you can use to make your product, and how to avoid conflicts with workers. Remember to explain to the investors why your plan will work.

World History 11-15-10

Caesar and Augustus were both great Roman leaders. They each influenced Rome's political history in major ways. Caesar used his military power to become dictator of Rome. Augustus was the first emperor of Rome.

Using the links below, research the two men and their strengths and weaknesses. Then create political campaign  that compare the qualities of each of these Roman leaders.  Students will work in partners and depict a political campaign. Each political campaign should be at least two minutes in length. Technology is highly recommended in your political campaign

World History Assignment 11-9-10

Ask students to assume one of the following roles: a Roman patrician, a Roman plebeian, or a Roman Soldier, a Roman woman, or a citizen of a land conquered by Rome. Then ask students to write a letter to a friend which describes their lives and the important developments taking place around them. Their letters should comment on the conditions with which they are happy and those with which they are unhappy. They should also describe their hopes and goals for the future. The letter should be written in goggle docs and shared with Mr. Barker.

With each company a student must list: when the company was establish, product or products produced by that company, private or corporate organization, and how are they familiar with this company. American History Assignment 11-2-10

Each student will chose an invention or process discussed in 6.1. Students will illustrate a poster identifying machines that use the assigned technology or items that are made with that technology. Write a caption identifying the inventor of the technology or process its common uses. Then on the back students will explain how technology has changed student's lives. Students will write several paragraphs explaining whether technology has had a positive or negative impact.

Use the Internet to learn more about the city of Rome, both in ancient times and today. How important are the ruins of the old city to the new city? Prepare a short oral report with visuals for the class on one aspect of the ancient city of Rome that may still influence Romans today. It could be a building or an idea. Make sure to explain how the modern city has embraced this part of its past. Use goggle docs for your presentation

American History assignment 10-4-10

Each student is to write a 1-page descriptive paper of a conflict between American Indians and American Settlers in the West: the Battle of Little Bighorn, the Long Walk, or the Massacre at Wounded Knee. Each paper must explain the events of the conflict and describe the significance of these events and what were the results of the conflict.

American History Assignment 9-22-10

Students imagine they are reporters for a northern newspaper who have been sent to the South to write a blog post about the effects of the war. Each blog should include the physical changes in the South along with the emotional responses to these changes.
